Intel Management Engine Components

What is Intel Management Engine Components?

This program provides the Intel Management Engine Components Driver for supported notebooks with supported operating systems. The Intel management Components monitor the installed Intel hardware, such as chip sets, storage, and other components. They will notify you if there are problems, updated drivers, and other information about those components. These components installed by the computer manufacturer automatically during the OS installation. Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) is hardware-based technology for remotely managing and securing PCs out-of-band. Intel AMT is available in desktop PCs with Intel Core 2 processor with Intel vPro technology and available in laptop PCs with Centrino or Centrino 2 platform with vPro technology. Intel AMT is hardware and firmware technology that builds certain functionality into business PCs in order to monitor, maintain, update, upgrade, and repair PCs.

Intel AMT is part of the Intel Management Engine, which is built into PCs with Intel vPro technology. AMT is not intended to be used by itself; it is intended to be used with a software management application. It gives a management application (and thus, the system administrator who uses it) better access to the PC down the wire, in order to remotely and securely do tasks that are difficult or sometimes impossible when working on a PC that does not have remote functionalities built into it.

Intel AMT includes hardware-based remote management, security, power-management, and remote-configuration features. These features allow an IT technician to access an AMT featured PC remotely. Intel AMT relies on a hardware-based out-of-band (OOB) communication channel that operates below the OS level, the channel is independent of the state of the OS (present, missing, corrupted, down). The communication channel is also independent of the PC's power state, the presence of a management agent, and the state of many hardware components (such as hard disk drives and memory).

Overview

The most common release is 8.1.0.1252, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named InstGACReg.exe. The setup package generally installs about 61 files and is usually about 12.16 MB (12,749,359 bytes). The installed file IntelWebAPIUpdaterActiveX.dll is the auto-update component of the program which is designed to check for software updates and notify and apply them when new versions are discovered.

I have an MSI Z87-G43 motherboard with Intel i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, Windows 8.1 Pro (OEM) running on a 128GB SSD druve C, and User files on a 2nd drive. The MSI Live Update 5 utility called for an automated update of Intel ME, which I did. But when restarted, more than half the tiles were missing from the start screen and underlying new Win8.1 programs list, and NOTHING appears or is accessable at the left bottom corner of the traditional desktop. Hardware components can still be reached and analyzed by way of File Finder, Control Panel and other tools or by entering the correct terms in the search bar, when those tools are brought out of hiding on the RIGHT side of the traditional Desktop. Not yet sure if all programs are still in the system somewhere. The ME installation even turned off my CPU fan, which I discovered only after I luckily entered the BIOS and saw that the CPU temperature had soared to above the capabilities of the system to measure. A Restore to a time just seconds before the Intel ME update, seems to have made no improvements at all. Looks like I might be forced to spend days to reformat and reinstall Windows, several programs and many documents, because MSI or Intel mistakes and an excessively large resident program having questionable value.
