TOSHIBA HW Setup

What is TOSHIBA HW Setup?

The TOSHIBA HWSetup program is a tool that allows you to configure your computer. The TOSHIBA HWSetup utility is an application designed in to provide a simple means of managing and configuring some installed TOSHIBA hardware on TOSHIBA laptops. The utility enables you to choose the internal LCD or the external monitor to be used at system startup as well as the boot priority. With HWSetup programs users can activate the 'Wake-up on Keyboard' feature and also customize the USB settings. If this utility or feature is not installed on your computer, you can verify if it is available for your specific model under "Downloads" on the TOSHIBA support web site (support.toshiba.com). Not all utilities are available for every model and operating system. When installing any utilities, install the TOSHIBA Value Added Package first.

Overview

It is bundled and preinstalled with various Toshiba computers. The most used version is 1.63.0.11c, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon installation and setup, it defines an auto-start registry entry which makes this program run on each Windows boot for all user logins. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is HWSetup.exe. The software installer includes 31 files and is usually about 2 MB (2,098,070 bytes).

This program is pre-installed on the PC

Such software is installed by the manufacture when delivering the PC to the end user. Some pre-installed programs are considered bloatware as they are simply limited function trials, while others are required for proper PC operation.
