What is SaveAs?

SaveAs from BetterSoft is an adware program in the form of a process and a web browser plugin. The Plugin is designed to monitor the user's search and browsing habits and deliver advertising by overwriting the content HTML within the user's web browser. The background service which is executed as a Windows scheduled task is designed to make sure the web browser plugin remains active as well as automatically keeps the software updated. The plugin itself runs differently depending on the web browser, for Internet Explorer it runs as a browser helper object (BHO).

Various anti-virus software products detect SaveAs as malware:
- VIPRE detects as Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT
- TrendMicro HouseCall detects as ADW_DLOAD
- BitDefender classifies it as Adware.BHO.Agent.E
- AhnLab detects it as PUP/Win32.BetterSoft

During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up (this is typically done to avoid any UAC prompts). A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The primary executable is named SaveAs.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 2 files and is usually about 527.58 KB (540,247 bytes).
