OptimizerPro

What is OptimizerPro?

OptimizerPro from BetterSoft is an adware program in the form of a process and a web browser plugin. The Plugin is designed to monitor the user's search and browsing habits and deliver advertising by overwriting the content HTML within the user's web browser. The background service which is executed as a Windows scheduled task is designed to make sure the web browser plugin remains active as well as automatically keeps the software updated. The plugin itself runs differently depending on the web browser, for Internet Explorer it runs as a browser helper object (BHO). Various anti-virus software products detect OptimizerPro as malware under the name PUP/Win32.BetterSoft.

Overview

During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up (this is typically done to avoid any UAC prompts). A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named OptimizerPro.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 4 files and is usually about 525.87 KB (538,489 bytes).
  • Malware detected in the program
  • Automatically starts with Windows
