GadgetBox Updater

What is GadgetBox Updater?

GadgetBox Updater from BetterSoft is an adware program in the form of a process and a web browser plugin. The Plugin is designed to monitor the user's search and browsing habits and deliver advertising by overwriting the content HTML within the user's web browser. The background service which is executed as a Windows scheduled task is designed to make sure the web browser plugin remains active as well as automatically keeps the software updated. The plugin itself runs differently depending on the web browser, for Internet Explorer it runs as a browser helper object (BHO). Various anti-virus products detect this software as malware under the name PUP/Win32.BetterSoft.

Overview

During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up (this is typically done to avoid any UAC prompts). A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The main program executable is GadgetBox Updater.exe. Typically most users end up uninstalling this just after a few days. The software installer includes 3 files and is usually about 527.65 KB (540,315 bytes).
