What is Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer?
The SQL Writer Service provides added functionality for backup and restore of SQL Server through the Volume Shadow Copy Service framework. The SQL Writer Service is installed automatically. It must be running when the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) application requests a backup or restore. To configure the service, use the Microsoft Windows Services applet.

Overview
The most used version is 9.00.5000.00, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is sqlwriter.exe. The software installer includes 184 files and is usually about 1.02 GB (1,097,823,678 bytes). Microsoft.SqlServer.PackageFormatUpdate.dll is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released.
