MossNet
What is MossNet?
MossNet is an adware/advertising supported web browser plugin that is typically bundled by a 3rd-party download manager which includes potentially unwanted software offers in order to monetize installs (PPI) or through malvertising practices. Once running, this adware is designed to deliver advertisements to the browser in a number of formats including banners, text hyper-links, inline text ads and/or transitionals. These ads are not affiliated with nor endorsed by the underlying website on which they appear and are just injected by the plugin and will appear in the header or footer of the web page or replace any legitimate ads the website already has implemented. Injected ad placements may contain links to further information about the ad (by clicking the "About this Ad".) The software also communicates with a remote server in order to report the browsing habits of the user as well as URLs and domains the browser visits so that it can update its advertisements.
Overview
The most common release is 2014.08.18.140926, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. It adds a Browser Helper Object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. The primary executable is named MossNetBHO.dll. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 20 files and is usually about 2.37 MB (2,481,343 bytes).
- Malware detected in the program
- Integrates into the web browser

- Typically distributed through a pay-per-install bundle
- Injects advertisements unassociated with the underlying web page
