What is snipsmart?

snipsmart is an adware Internet toolbar/extension that will deliver ads to the browser on web pages that are not affiliated with the ads or the extension. Ads will be injected as new ads that would not normally appear or displayed on top of ads that the underlying website is already providing. These ads often direct the user to download potentially unwanted software or purchase products from affiliates. If a coupon is being displayed, clicking on any of the offers will result in a redirect that will drop affiliate cookies on to the end user computer and resolve the end user to the advertiser page/offer.

snipsmart will communicate with a remote server in order to track the habits of the user including what domains the user visits, what pages they view and what advertisements are displayed and clicked on.

The most common release is 2014.12.03.222348, with over 91% of all installations currently using this version. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. It adds a Browser Helper Object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. The primary executable is named snipsmartbho.dll. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 42 files and is usually about 2.38 MB (2,498,674 bytes).
