What is Microsoft Lync 2010?

Microsoft Lync 2010 is an instant messaging clients used with Microsoft Lync Server or Lync Online available with Microsoft Office 365. It replaces the Windows Messenger which was used with Microsoft Exchange Server. Basic features include instant messaging, Voice Over IP, and video conferencing inside the client software. Lync uses a number of extensions to the SIP/SIMPLE instant messaging protocol for some features.

Overview

The most common release is 4.0.7577.4446, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. It adds a Browser Helper Object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named ocpubmgr.exe. The setup package generally installs about 31 files and is usually about 72.72 MB (76,250,128 bytes).
