What is Zombie Alert?
This is ad-supported (adware) software, part of Injekt, that is very difficult to remove as the publisher will ignore the Windows Add/Remove feature and re-install it after the user reboot their PC. The program is desigend to inject various forms of ads on the user's web browser - "Applications may be supported by advertising, which may include display ads (banner ads), in-text ads, interstitial ads, or other types of ads. Users may see additional ads when using their Internet browser or other software applications."
In addition this adware will modify the user's PC settings - "Applications may be automatically enabled on your web browsers following installation. Applications or advertisements may require changing your web browser’s default home page, default page or set of pages on startup, default search provider, and other browser settings."
As well as bundle additional adware offers - "Additional optional offers may be presented to the User for download. Any new Applications selected by you will be downloaded and installed automatically."
Overview
The most common release is 2.6.79, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. The primary executable is named ZombieAlertService.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 7 files and is usually about 1.67 MB (1,753,971 bytes).
