What is WinMerge?

WinMerge is a free software tool for file comparison and merging text-like files. It is useful for determining what has changed between versions, and then merging changes between versions. Visual differencing and merging of text files. Flexible editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers and word-wrap. Rudimentary Visual SourceSafe and Rational ClearCase integration. Ability to ignore whitespace and letter case changes. Regular expression based file filters in directory compare allow excluding and including items.

Overview

A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). When installed, it will add a context menu handler to the Windows shell in order to provide quick access to the program. The main program executable is winmergeu.exe.
