I saw no need for this program when I had my Canon printer and scanner installed on my mini-laptop and I hated the irritating control panel that automatically attached itself to the Start menu (rather than giving you an option at installation) and which covered up 1/4 of the screen on my notebook. So when I installed the printer and scanner on my regular computer, I unchecked the box for "My Image Garden" (which is also a huge file). I wasn't sure whether or not this would create problems using my Cannon MP235 but it hasn't. So if anyone is wondering the same thing, NO, it is not necessary to your hardware's functioning, even if it is included in your software package.
