What is Xvid Video Codec?

Xvid is a video codec library following the MPEG-4 standard, specifically MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP). It uses ASP features such as b-frames, global and quarter pixel motion compensation, lumi masking, trellis quantization, and H.263, MPEG and custom quantization matrices.

Overview

The most used version is 1.3.2, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is AviC.exe. The software installer includes 28 files and is usually about 6.66 MB (6,982,743 bytes). xvidupdate.exe is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released.
