What is MyHeritage Family Tree Builder?
Family Tree Builder (FTB) is genealogy software to create family trees. The free download version is distributed as freeware, with no restrictions, although registration is required to run the software. Users may pay a fee to "unlock" the additional features in the Premium version. The free download version may thus be considered a kind of registerware and crippleware. Users may add birth, death, and marriage dates; notes about where their ancestors lived, their profession, hobbies and interests; and picture of ancestors. The program can also create charts that show how two people are related. Users can build their family tree either offline or on a secure online site, and offline trees can be published to a family site.
Overview
The most used version is 7.0.0.7128, with over 66% of all installations currently using this version. Upon installation and setup, it defines an auto-start registry entry which makes this program run on each Windows boot for all user logins. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is myheritage.exe. The software installer includes 41 files and is usually about 38.54 MB (40,411,758 bytes). FTBCheckUpdates.exe is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released.
