Browsers Apps (Freeven) is an advertising-supported web browser toolbar/extension that will make the following changes to the browser's settings:

- Changes the default home page and new tabs and protect these search settings
- Changes the default search engine in your Internet Browser, including the browser's built-in search box
- Adds an addition of alternative error page functionality, such as “Page Not Found” and DNS errors
- Tracks usage behavior. Information about the search queries submited in connection with the Toolbar and how it is interacted with search results may be used to personalize the content and advertisements

Once running, this adware is designed to deliver advertisements to the browser in a number of formats including banners, text hyper-links, inline text ads and/or transitionals. These ads are not affiliated with nor endorsed by the underlying website on which they appear and are just injected by the plugin and will appear in the header or footer of the web page or replace any legitimate ads the website already has implemented. The software also communicates with a remote server in order to report the browsing habits of the user as well as URLs and domains the browser visits so that it can update its advertisements.

The most common release is 1.34.8.12, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up (this is typically done to avoid any UAC prompts). It adds a Browser Helper Object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). In the Google Chrome browser, it will add an extension. The primary executable is named Browsers Apps-bg.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 358 files and is usually about 14.6 MB (15,306,976 bytes).

This browser extension utilizes Crossrider framework, a cross-browser toolbar/plugin platform used to develop, deploy and monetize web browser toolbars for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Crossrider extension provide monetization options, mostly potentially unwanted apps, for toolbars including coupons, search assistant (home page and search hijacking) and in-text contextual advertising. Many adware programs (defined by a number of anti-virus vendors) are built using Crossrider as it provides a quick an easy way to deploy ad-supported features that will assist in browser search hijacking.
