BrowserDefender

What is BrowserDefender?

PerformerSoft/Bit89 BrowserDefender, a variant of the Browser Protector Software is a web browser add-in classified mostly a potentially unwanted application that used to be bundled with PerformerSoft products including PC Performer. BrowserDefender is designed to protect its bundled programs and make sure they remain installed or unchanged by other third party programs. It does this by preventing changes to the registry by other programs including the web browser itself. It runs in the background as a Windows service with full administrator privileges in order to help prevent removal.

Overview

Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named BrowserDefender.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 5 files and is usually about 7.88 MB (8,266,060 bytes).
