AppLow
from InstalleRex-WebPick
What is AppLow?
AppLow is an adware program that will display extra advertisements when users are using search engines such as Bing and Google. In Chrome, it installs itself as an extension and in Internet Explorer it runs as a process as well as a Browser Helper Object. It also adds itself as a Windows add-on. The program creates an entry in the Add or Remove Programs of the Control Panel however deleting this entry might stop the adware running, but will not stop ads from displaying. Once installed, This adware displays ads if a user searches using Bing or Google by injecting or inserting over new ads in search as well as various web pages that use 3rd party advertising. The software users the InstalleRex download and install manager from WebPicks Holdings used to distribute Pay Per Install monetized software, typically unwanted toolbars and web browser extensions.
Overview
During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up (this is typically done to avoid any UAC prompts). It adds a Browser Helper Object (BHO) to Internet Explorer. Once installed, it will add an extension to both the Firefox and Chrome web browsers. The main program executable is utils.exe. Typically most users end up uninstalling this just after a few days. The software installer includes 17 files and is usually about 7.06 MB (7,400,537 bytes). AppLow-updater.exe is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released.
The program is built using the Crossrider framework, a cross browser monetization platform used to deploy a toolbar and extension for modern web browsers with monetization features including browser search and homepage redirection, contextual coupons and in-line text advertising. Crossrider extensions include background processes to monitor, update and automatically download new features/code without direct user interaction.
