bProtector for Windows

What is bProtector for Windows?

bProtector for Windows (also known as BrowserDefender) is a potentially unwanted application that is typically bundled with shareware third party installers. bProtector will prevent various security and other web browser extensions and toolbars from running. This service will prevent other applications (and sometimes the user) from modifying the web browser's home and search pages as well as the search provider set by the bProtector product, an affiliate search engine partner.

Its is typically installed with various PerformerSoft programs including PC Performance Manager and Video Performance Manager.

Overview

Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named bProtect.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 15 files and is usually about 7.62 MB (7,991,896 bytes).

The support.microsoft.com link results in a list of programs from which I can select to be uninstalled. If the program name appears in the control panel list of programs but not in the list from support.microsoft.com, there is a "not listed" option. Selecting not listed asks for a product code. This is most unhelpful. The program name that appears in control panel is "PDF Reader Packages" and no other information is supplied.
