TOSHIBA Hardware Setup

What is TOSHIBA Hardware Setup?

The TOSHIBA HWSetup program is a tool that allows you to configure your computer. The TOSHIBA HWSetup utility is an application designed in to provide a simple means of managing and configuring some installed TOSHIBA hardware on TOSHIBA laptops. The utility enables you to choose the internal LCD or the external monitor to be used at system startup as well as the boot priority. With HWSetup programs users can activate the 'Wake-up on Keyboard' feature and also customize the USB settings. If this utility or feature is not installed on your computer, you can verify if it is available for your specific model under "Downloads" on the TOSHIBA support web site (support.toshiba.com). Not all utilities are available for every model and operating system. When installing any utilities, install the TOSHIBA Value Added Package first.

Overview

The most common release is 2.00.06, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named SVPWUTIL.exe. The setup package generally installs about 93 files and is usually about 4.35 MB (4,561,586 bytes).

This program is pre-installed on the PC

Pre-installed software such as this is usually included by default on the manufacturer's PC. Many OEM (original equipment manufacture) software that is included with a new PC is useful and in many cases required for the PC to function properly as in the case of various software drivers. However, some pre-installed software is optional and can be safely removed.
Some users and experts alike have reported that this program is considered bloatware or bundleware. Such software is optional and can be safely removed if you do not utilize the features of the progam.
Toshiba laptops come pre-installed with dozens of both commercial trial software as well as Toshiba utilities known as 'Features and Utilities'. Many pre-installed features and utilities are very useful features, however, many could be safely removed in order to clean up your PC. Most of the utilities are located using the search feature located in the START menu.
  • It is usually licensed for use only on the Toshiba PC on which it was pre-installed.
  • It sometimes difficult for users to remove via the 'Uninstall a Program' feature in Windows.
