Windows Live Mail

What is Windows Live Mail?

Windows Live Mail is a free of charge email client from Microsoft. It is the successor to Outlook Express on Windows XP and Windows Mail on Windows Vista. The application is available for download via the Windows Essentials suite.

Overview

The most common release is 12.0.1606.1023, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. It adds registry entry for the current user which will allow the program to automatically start each time it is rebooted. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named wlmail.exe. The setup package generally installs about 48 files and is usually about 1.05 MB (1,097,216 bytes).
