Garry's Mod

What is Garry's Mod?

Garry's Mod is a sandbox physics game using a modified Source engine. Garry's Mod has been available on Valve's content delivery service, Steam. Garry's Mod used to require the user to own at least one game on Steam based on the Source engine. It is also commonly used for the creation and publishing of videos on YouTube. Garry's Mod was originally a modification for Valve's Half-Life 2, but was later made into a standalone Steam game. Although Garry's Mod is usually considered to be a full game, it has no game objective and players can use the game's set of tools for any purpose. Garry's Mod allows players to manipulate "props" – various objects that players can place in-game. Props can be selected from any installed Source engine game or from a community created collection. The game features two "guns" – Physics Gun and Tool Gun for manipulating objects. Garry's Mod takes advantage of the Source engine's modified version of the Havok Physics Engine, which allows players to build contraptions that follow the laws of physics. Garry's Mod supports multiplayer gameplay on dedicated game servers. Players can build contraptions together and communicate via text or voice.

Overview

During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named hl2.exe. The setup package generally installs about 174 files and is usually about 30.1 MB (31,564,799 bytes). The installed file GMT Updater.exe is the auto-update component of the program which is designed to check for software updates and notify and apply them when new versions are discovered.
