Baidu Antivirus

What is Baidu Antivirus?  (from Baidu)

Baidu Antivirus protects your computer against malware, phishing and malicious websites, worms, and trojans. Remove viruses. Free download and permanently free in future use. Baidu Antivirus consists of Antivirus, Cloud Scan, HIPS, Firewall, Anti-phishing.

Overview

Baidu Antivirus is a program developed by Baidu. The most used version is 5.4.3.133394, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon installation and setup, it defines an auto-start registry entry which makes this program run on each Windows boot for all user logins. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. When installed, it will add a context menu handler to the Windows shell in order to provide quick access to the program. The main program executable is bav.exe. The software installer includes 62 files and is usually about 64.57 MB (67,704,688 bytes). BavUpdater.exe is the automatic update component of the software designed to download and apply new updates should new versions be released. In comparison to the total number of users, most PCs are running the OS Windows 7 (SP1) as well as Windows 10. While about 32% of users of Baidu Antivirus come from Brazil, it is also popular in the United States and Egypt.

I had initially read many good reviews about this, so I installed it on my personal PC to replace Microsoft's security essentials (MSE). It was good and caught a lot of bugs that MSE didn't catch. So I decided to install it on all the PCs at the office. After a while networking became very slow till all PCs couldn't connect to the server and internet anymore. We hired IT people to check our networking to find no issues. It is only when we revived 1 unused PC that didn't have Baidu is when I realized it may be Baidu Antivirus causing the problem. After removing it from all my PC at the office, the networking revived and functionality came back to normal. It took three months and 2 IT guys and money to just realize it was nothing but Baidu Antivirus causing the problem on my network and office PCs.
