ASUS Live Update

What is ASUS Live Update?

The Live Update application provides users with a means of having the system components updated automatically. Users can also schedule the updates so they can take place daily, every third day, weekly, every second week, monthly or every third month as opposed to automatically.

Overview

It is typically pre-installed with most new ASUS computers. The most common release is 2.5.9, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named LiveUpdate.exe. The setup package generally installs about 14 files and is usually about 5.21 MB (5,457,907 bytes). The installed file LiveUpdate.exe is the auto-update component of the program which is designed to check for software updates and notify and apply them when new versions are discovered.

This program is pre-installed on ASUS PCs

Pre-installed software such as this is usually included by default on the manufacturer's PC. Many OEM (original equipment manufacture) software that is included with a new PC is useful and in many cases required for the PC to function properly as in the case of various software drivers. However, some pre-installed software is optional and can be safely removed.
Some users and experts alike have reported that this program is considered bloatware or bundleware. Such software is optional and can be safely removed if you do not utilize the features of the progam.
  • It is usually licensed for use only on the ASUS PC on which it was pre-installed.
  • It sometimes difficult for users to remove via the 'Uninstall a Program' feature in Windows.

This program drives me insane. It can not be set to quietly run in the background - no idea what the schedule is as it is constantly popping up nag windows that it needs administrator permission to make changes to the computer. This pop-up will not go away unless yes/or no is clicked on. Computer is locked up until it is done. Ii also pops up the taskbar back on from hiding - which makes it impossible to activate any security notes under the taskbar. Pop ups are so frequent that it disrupts any work (mine about every 5 minutes 24/7). Not knowing if safe to remove, I had simply renamed .exe to .xex. Now I do get nag pop ups from Windows that it can't find it. Well - at least these popups are in the middle of screen and can be closed off without hassle. Update once a day at start up is sufficient, as other software looks after updates as well.. In my opinion Asus Liveupdate behaves like spyware, not updating , but constantly harvesting information about user activities..
