Xfire
from Xfire Inc.
What is Xfire?
Xfire is a proprietary freeware instant messaging service for gamers that also serves as a game server browser with various other features. Xfire features the ability to detect the video game a particular user is running. By analyzing running processes, Xfire can detect active games and send that information to Xfire clients with the current player as a friend.
Some versions use the OpenCandy software library to bundle potentially unwanted software offers during installation.
Overview
A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named xfire.exe. It also includes a system tray icon that is displayed in the notifications area while the program is running. The setup package generally installs about 62 files and is usually about 24.21 MB (25,388,110 bytes).
Xfire has been seen bundling various 3rd party software during the installation process. Make sure to check for and remove unused programs.
