What is TrueCrypt?

Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows. Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk. Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive. Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication). Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named TrueCrypt.exe. It also includes a system tray icon that is displayed in the notifications area while the program is running. The setup package generally installs about 112 files and is usually about 7.63 MB (8,005,074 bytes).
