Spotify is a music streaming service that offers digitally restricted streaming of selected music from a range of record labels. Record labels that Spotify can access include Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal Music can be browsed by artist, album, record label, genre or playlist as well as by direct searches. On desktop clients, a link allows the listener to purchase selected material via partner retailers. A free trial period is activated upon Spotify account registration where a user can listen to an unlimited amount of music supported by visual and radio-style advertising. Users can access applications integrated in the Spotify desktop client. Spotify operates under a freemium model, which is offering simple and basic services free for the user to try and more advanced or additional features at a premium offer; however this is augmented by income from music purchases within the player. It offers a per month unlimited subscription, close to the Open Music Model estimated economic equilibrium for the recording industry.
