Savings Hen

What is Savings Hen?

This adware (from 50OnRed) injects itself into the user's web browser (IE, Chrome and Firefox) and will display out-of context advertising on web sites that are not associated with the software or its affiliate partners. Advertisements will be displayed as banner and video ads, search related ads, transitional and in-text ads and links. The software will also periodically self-update and call home for instructions as well as additional ad feeds and reporting of how the user interacts with the software as well as what domains and web pages the user visits. The software also uses various techniques to help prevent itself from being found and removed by traditional antivirus software. In addition, the Chrome extension it adds prevents users from manually removing it by protecting it using Group Policies as well as the Chrome ExtensionInstallForcelist setting. In some cases the software adds a local Internet proxy server that it routes all web traffic through in order to inject advertising. Through protection via the Group Policy, it will prevent users from manually removing the Internet Settings in the Control Panel.

From the EULA:
"You may also see relevant coupons, deal and special offers when the Plugin recognizes the website you are visiting as an eligible site for our programs. For example, when you visit the websites of certain merchants or Engaging Apps partners, you may get an alert that you can click on to see specific coupons, deals and offers, or you may see a slider visible in the top right-hand portion of your browser displaying various offers that we hope will be of interest to you."
