What is Notepad++?

Notepad++ is a text editor and source code editor for Windows. It aims to be a lightweight and robust editor for a variety of programming and scripting languages. One advantage of Notepad++ over the built-in Windows text editor Notepad, is that Notepad++ supports tabbed editing, which allows working with multiple open files. Notepad++ is distributed as free software. To display and edit text and programming language source code files, Notepad++ uses the Scintilla editor component.

Overview

The most common release is 6.3, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. When installed, it will add a context menu handler to the Windows shell in order to provide quick access to the program. The primary executable is named notepad++.exe. The setup package generally installs about 33 files and is usually about 11.9 MB (12,474,806 bytes).
