Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

What is Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express?

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is a free, easy-to-use graphical management tool for managing SQL Server Express Edition and SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services. SSMSE can also manage instances of the SQL Server Database Engine created by any edition of SQL Server.

The most used version is 9.00.2047.00, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The main program executable is SQLEXPR.EXE. The software installer includes 222 files and is usually about 15.35 MB (16,091,907 bytes).
