Overview

AVG 2013 is a software program developed by AVG Technologies. The most common release is 2013.0.2904, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functing properly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named avgmfapx.exe. The setup package generally installs about 74 files and is usually about 89.96 MB (94,332,604 bytes). Relative to the overall usage of users who have this installed on their PCs, most are running Windows 7 (SP1) and Windows 8. While about 55% of users of AVG 2013 come from the United States, it is also popular in United Kingdom and Canada.

I've also used AVG for 5 or 6 years and I've been completely virus free. A lot of it probably has to do with how well you can judge which sites/downloads are safe to use to begin with, but even AVG's free version outperforms many other popular antivirus programs.
